On October 4 th 2022 at the Compass Conference Hall of Plovdiv University, the lecture of Assoc.
Prof. DSc Vasil Kirov from the IPS-BAS titled “Is the future of work inclusive in European
regions? Findings from the BEYOND4.0 project” took place.
The event is part of a cycle of public lectures within the cycle “European policy and practice in
science, technology and innovation”.
Digital transformation threatens the future of work due to the rapid entry of automation (Frey &
Osborne, 2017). However, new findings attempt to nuance this pessimistic view (Warhurst et al.,
2019) and support the idea that job destruction can be accompanied by job creation, job change
and job displacement (Degryse, 2016). Thus, different positive and negative developments are
observed in the European regions. In this context, an important question is why entrepreneurial
ecosystems and companies in some regions might be more resilient than others, allowing them to
survive and grow.
The empirical study is part of a larger EU H2020 project, BEYOND4.0 (http://beyond4-0.eu/),
analyzing the impact of digitization on European regions, based on examples from Bulgaria,
Germany, Spain, the Netherlands , United Kingdom and Finland.
